Our Crash Bar and Skid Plate System were designed to make sure your bike is protected no matter what type of adventure you find yourself in.AltRider Crash Bars are known for the center connector which ties the two bar halves together to distribute the load from a crash evenly to both sides of the bike rather than being directed to just one side. This approach dramatically increases the chances of surviving a crash with little to no damage. With the S 1000 XR, we went a step further by adding a second crossover. Now there is one point low in front of the engine, and a second point high under the beak designed to transfer impact load. This is the only design on the market that can provide real protection in a crash or tip over. Multiple connection points, wider coverage from top to bottom of the bike, and maximum load deflection allows our bar design to fit closely to the frame of the bike. This keeps the bike’s profile narrow and prevents any loss of cornering clearance.The bottom of a motorcycle is the most susceptible to hits from curbs, rocks, debris, and nearly everything else and needs the most solid protection. Our team has brought together a smart design leveraging knowledge from our long list of existing skid plates as well as addressing the challenges the XR presents in terms of its frame and low clearance. We’ve added new and innovative features to bring forth our best skid plate yet. Constructed of 3.175 mm (1/8') lightweight aluminum, it provides the most coverage on the market without adding excessive weight to your bike. These bars are constructed in the United States from 1.25 in (3.175 cm) diameter steel tubing with 0.079 in (2.0 mm) wall thickness. Boasting more than twice the stiffness compared to 1 in (2.54 cm) tubing, no other crash bar design on the market offers such robust protection for the Africa Twin. This added strength enabled AltRider engineers to design the Lower Crash Bars to take the first hit in a tip-over or low-side crash before any of the bike’s vital components come in contact with the ground. The hand-TIG welded crash bars are CNC mandrel formed around the rear brake lever for excellent ergonomics while still providing powerful protection. The rear of the Lower Crash Bars mount in-board of the right foot peg by way of the 3/16 in (4.8 mm) mounting flanges, which will transfer impact energy away from the motor to the lower frame. Up front, 3/16 in (4.8 mm) thick stainless steel brackets fastens the bars directly to the frame.The Upper Crash Bars provide complete coverage for the bike’s vulnerable radiator and expensive plastic fairings. The 1 in (2.54 cm) diameter stainless steel tubing is hand-TIG welded in the USA and mounts directly to frame rather than the engine case. The Lower and Upper Crash Bars meet at 3/16 in (4.8 mm) thick stainless steel mounting brackets, which tie to the front sub-frame and headstock using included M6 bolts, a dramatic advantage over all other designs on the market. This ensures a solid connection to the motorcycle’s frame, especially when installed in conjunction with the Reinforcement Crash Bars. Once the upper system is tied to the stout lower 1.25 in (3.175 cm) bars the system becomes clearly the strongest solution option. PEM captive nuts make for easy removal for servicing.The third and final component of AltRider’s 3-part Crash Bar System for the Honda Africa Twin, the Reinforcement Crash Bars strengthen the entire system by tying the upper and lower bars together. This design allows for even large impacts to be distributed throughout the entire system, minimizing damage to the bike’s engine, frame and other vital components.The Reinforcement Crash Bars are made from 1 in (2.54 cm) diameter stainless steel tubing with .083 in (2.1 mm) wall thickness and are hand-TIG welded in the United States for maximum strength. The Reinforcement Crash Bars mount to the Upper and Lower Crash Bars by way of integrated threaded mounting points with included stainless steel hardware, making installation easy and fast.Select a configuration at the right for additional information on individual components.Configuration notes: save when you buy the Upper & Lower Bars Combo, and save even more when you buy the Full System (compared to purchasing each piece separately). When used correctly they are 100% waterproof and dust-proof. Hemisphere soft panniers offer lighter weight and a narrower profile than aluminum hard boxes. With approximately 125 liters of storage space, the Hemisphere soft panniers are designed for larger adventure bikes -- perfect for that Saturday ride or multi-day treks off the beaten path. The Hemisphere soft panniers are constructed from ballistic nylon, using military grade stitching and fully taped seams in all dry bags. After a rigorous testing process, AltRider designed an innovative holster system with a full length nylon belt around the top of the holster. Not only is this belt anchored to the center piece on each end, it is looped over and box-stitched back onto itself for incredible strength. This technique was chosen due to the high stress put on the corners when under load. The holster is secured to the bike with nylon compression straps which wrap the entire pannier to prevent the 'hammering' effect of loaded bags on rugged terrain. Oversized sleeves on the outside of the bags keep the compression straps in place and prevent snagging if the bike goes down. Custom aluminum tension hooks are easy to install but won’t come undone under load.Upper Compartments // 68 liters totalEach side of the holster has an upper compartment with a removable 34 liter dry bag. These custom dry bags are constructed from vinyl coated polyester and feature a roll top closure utilizing 1.5' delrin buckles -- easy to use, even with gloves on. This roll top closure allows the bag to expand or collapse depending on capacity requirements and fully seals out the elements. The dry bags are perfect for your items that need to stay completely dry -- clothes, sleeping bags, electronics, etc. Because these items are lightweight, they can be stored high on the bike without sacrificing handling. These bars are constructed in the United States from 1.25 in (3.175 cm) diameter steel tubing with 0.079 in (2.0 mm) wall thickness. Boasting more than twice the stiffness compared to 1 in (2.54 cm) tubing, no other crash bar design on the market offers such robust protection for the Africa Twin. This added strength enabled AltRider engineers to design the Lower Crash Bars to take the first hit in a tip-over or low-side crash before any of the bike’s vital components come in contact with the ground. The hand-TIG welded crash bars are CNC mandrel formed around the rear brake lever for excellent ergonomics while still providing powerful protection. The rear of the Lower Crash Bars mount in-board of the right foot peg by way of the 3/16 in (4.8 mm) mounting flanges, which will transfer impact energy away from the motor to the lower frame. Up front, 3/16 in (4.8 mm) thick stainless steel brackets fastens the bars directly to the frame.The Upper Crash Bars provide complete coverage for the bike’s vulnerable radiator and expensive plastic fairings. And that’s not the only ace up BMW’s sleeve for 2013.A new bike requires new protection, so AltRider completely redesigned the crash bars for the new water boxer model. A step up from years past, they utilize 1.25' (31.75 mm) O.D. stainless steel tubing making them the largest diameter bars on the market. The decision to increase the diameter came from years of research and production results. The West Coast BMW Off-Road Training School has been outfitting their bikes with AltRider gear for the past 3 years. This real world testing yielded much insight on how much damage large bikes can do during crashes. 1' bars (25.4 mm) allow a significant amount of flex during a crash, creating the need to space them farther from the bike. The stout 1.25' bars allow a tighter profile while still providing real protection. Available in shot peen satin or black powder coat finish, they’re extremely resistant to rust whether you’re riding the liquid cooled GS across the highway or across a river.The top of the bars are secured in a total of three locations per side. The front mount is the only one on the market designed to utilize 2 bolts per side to increase the ability to distribute the load of any impact. The rear is held with a custom machined through-bolt that replaces the engine mount hardware -- increasing strength of the bars up to 25%. AltRider offers one of only a few designs that utilize a custom machined through-bolt. There are no plastic spacers to break upon impact. This creates an incredibly strong design that distributes any impact evenly throughout the bars, and also makes a solid foundation for upper crash bars.Another first for AltRider crash bars are the integrated 3/16' (4.76 mm) lower flanges designed to interface with an AltRider skid plate. This creates a modular protection system that doesn’t mount directly to the motor and is substantially more robust than anything else on the market. Other bars are fabricated by crimping then welding joints, creating a forced fit with a weak bond. In this method, gaps are created which are later filled with weld. The additional heat causes warpage and all-too-common installation difficulties. All AltRider joints are 5-axis laser cut, creating a perfect union before the bars are hand TIG welded in a jig. This process creates a precision fit, easy installation and superior strength. Weighing in at just less than 800 pounds, AltRider’s in-house design team took a careful analysis of the center of gravity and the ability to distribute the robust load on impact. In the case of an accidental tip-over, the cross bar distributes the load from one side to the other, relieving pressure from the existing mounting points to the other side of the bike. The connector bar adds significant strength to the design, effectively connecting into the threaded and blind boss on each side which provides 2 more locations for distributing impact. The engine protection bars are available in shot peen silver or powdercoat black.The assembly for these engine protection bars is moved out 1.75' and up 2' from the original OEM design. This unique design change was made for two reasons:1. This design provides a higher resting angle when the bike is on its side, allowing a rider to pick the bike up after it falls on its side. Unlike boxer motors, the K1600 will lie almost flat making it difficult to even pick up the bike. The higher point of the bar will stop the bike from rolling over further, making it manageable for a single operator to upright the bike. This will minimize the damage to the upper fairings, windshield, mirrors, and handlebars.2. The current OEM engine bars are placed very low on the frame and become a pivot point causing a falling bike to continue to topple over onto the upper fairings. Our design halts this problem with the enlargement of the AltRider bars, preventing the bike from rolling over further in any crash or stationary drop.
